It only took a black man to have a knee on his neck for 9 minutes, it only took international protests, it only took countless black men and women to get killed at the hands of police. It only took Rodney King, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, Philando Castille, Ahmad Arbery, Mike Brown, and endless amounts of black lives. It only took that…to get an inch of justice.
For Ottawa, for Canada what does this mean? It means that we are finally shifting…from an era of “Police is always right” to questioning these institutions. To recognizing that the same people who are here to protect US…should protect “us” (black people) as well, not just the majority. Let me emphasize this…this is a small victory in the war against police brutality against black people. This is a small victory in the war against institutional racism. This is small victory for every black person who has been mistreated in a system that was never for them. This is a small victory…because the war…has just begun.
