Artist Profile: Kazi

One of the hottest new rappers in the city is undoubtedly Kazi, a unique sound in Ottawa. What stands out about Kazi is his ability to connect with wider audiences and even international viewers. He has fans in Rwanda!!! As he prepares for his debut EP “A Trappers Park Story” we decided to give him an artist profile, here it is, enjoy.

Bytown Blog: What got you into music? Any inspirations?

Kazi: It initially started in my household, my father was a music connoisseur. Ever since I was 3, I recall music blasting at the house for hours. I was exposed to a variety of genres such as Pop, R&B/Soul and Soft Rock. Some of the most notable artists were Michael Jackson, Seal and The Bee Gees.

Michael Jackson, one of Kazi’s early inspirations

Later in my elementary years, my uncle introduced me to rap. I specifically remember him playing me “College Dropout” by Kanye West on his CD player. That day I probably replayed “Jesus Walks” fifty times. As I grew older I took it upon myself to further discover music. Aside from the one’s I’ve mentioned, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Drake were very inspirational to me.

How do you describe yourself as an artist?

I’d describe myself as thoughtful, crafty, transparent. Thoughtful because I’m considerate of what I say and I strive on instilling meaning into my music. Crafty because I value my delivery, composition style and delivery. Transparent because I share my real feelings, perspective and outlook on everything.

Your favorite and least favorite song/mixtape (from yourself and/or the current music scene)

J.Cole and Young Thug

My favorite project right now is “A Trappers Park Story” by yours truly. One of my favorite songs at the moment is “Stressed” by Young Thug featuring J.Cole. I don’t have a least favorite song or tape, If I don’t like it I won’t listen to it.

Any heat coming soon?

My debut EP “A Trappers Park Story” will be out at the top of the year, January 2022. It has 7 songs and a few features from some of my favorites in the city. This project took me a year to make but it encapsulated my upbringing and my life until this point.
